Here is the technical info on materials, construction and rarity. The Official Star Trek Insignia Collection, released by the Franklin Mint in 1992, features 12 insignias from the Original Series, The Next Generation, and Deep Space Nine.

Material: Each insignia is minted in solid. 925 sterling silver and embellished with 24-karat gold plating. Dimensions: Individual pieces measure approximately 3" x 2" and weigh roughly one ounce each.

Display: The set is housed in a hardwood hinged case (21" x 16") with a glass front, magnetic closure, and dark blue velvet lining. Details: The glass border is accented with 24-karat gold, and each insignia sits above a descriptive identifying plaque.

Authentication: Authentic pieces are hallmarked with. 925 Sterling and the Franklin Mint logo on the reverse. The Second Set: Deep Space Nine Collection (1994).

This set followed the same high-end manufacturing standards as the first, maintaining a consistent aesthetic for collectors who wanted to display them side-by-side. Composition: Like the first set, these were minted in solid. 925 sterling silver and plated in 24-karat gold. The Insignias: While the first set featured many Starfleet deltas, this second set included more diverse emblems such as. Specific Deep Space Nine station-specific icons. Display: It was housed in a matching hardwood and glass display case.

The 1994 case is often distinguishable by the Deep Space Nine logo etched or printed on the glass or the internal plaque, though it kept the signature blue velvet lining. The manufacturing process for the second set was identical to the first, handled by the Franklin Mint's precision minting division. Striking: These were "minted" like coins rather than cast like jewelry.

This allowed for the razor-sharp geometric lines seen on the Cardassian and Bajoran emblems. Plating: A heavy "electro-plate" process was used to apply the 24k gold, ensuring the gold wouldn't flake off over time (a common issue with cheaper brass or lead-based replicas). If you are looking to acquire this set, be aware that because it was released later and focused on a single show rather than the whole franchise, it had a smaller production run than the 1992 set.

This often makes the 1994 DS9 set slightly harder to find in complete, "mint" condition today.
