This medal commemorates the appearance of Comet Kohoutek, discovered in 1973 by Czech astronomer Lubos Kohoutek. The comet generated worldwide interest as it passed through the inner solar system in late 1973 and early 1974. The obverse features a depiction of Comet Kohoutek with its sweeping tail, while the reverse illustrates the orbital path of the comet in relation to the Earth and Sun, along with the date 1973.
